I've been learning languages for a long time. A lot of this time my experiences were pretty useless. I once spent 6 weeks being grilled by a terrible French teacher on furniture vocabulary. SIX WEEKS! All I remember from those lessons was the word for armchair and wall. Oh and how to ask for a glass of water. I also built up an intense hatred of memorising vocabulary. I once paid for a weeks worth of lessons. 3 hours a day in France. Full immersion style and came away only knowing how to say "because" because the kid next to me kept saying it. I learnt more from him than my teacher!

So what changed?
After I took an English teaching certificate I learnt a few effective techniques. I spoke to other language learners and teachers and picked up tips and tricks from them. Most importantly I discovered comprehensible input and story-telling theory. This is when things started to change. I borrowed a French audio book from the library and listened while reading along. It was a short book so it was easy to repeat a few times. This one book improved my vocabulary, grammar and listening skills in about a month! This was the spur I needed to start doing more things I enjoyed; watching movies, reading and listing to INTERESTING content. I was learning effective techniques that actually worked AND that I enjoyed. Most importantly I started to speak. Speaking was hard at first because I couldn't find the right teacher. Just more teachers who talked AT me in fast French. Then luckily I found an amazing teacher who taught using comprehensible input (language at my level) and stories. Our lessons involved asking me lots of questions but giving me the space to speak freely without fear of mistakes. I used what I learnt from her to develop my own teaching style as well as improve my own French. I also used an amazing website called News In Slow French where I could listen and read French at a slow speed so I could actually understand. My French level gradually began to improve. I'm at a point now where I can understand whole movies with the help of transcripts. I can understand about 90 percent of what my teacher says. Just 1 year ago this was not the case!

So what helped me?
Listening and reading to French at my level and slowly increasing the difficulty level. Listening to two types of audio, real audio AND audio designed for learners. If you only listen to fast audio you'll never understand, but if you only listen to slow audio you wont get a feel for the natural language. So you need to do both. Also actually speaking made a huge improvement. You cannot learn by studying, you have to learn by doing, So if you want to speak you have to speak! I also discovered shadowing and reverse translation. Both great ways to study the language while using the language.

How do my courses help you?
I know how hard it is making those first steps towards conversation. You really want to say something but what should you say and what if you sound stupid? My courses give you real life dialogue scripts for friendly chat. Each course has dialogue at a speed you can understand. The course encourages you to study the vocabulary, shadow and reverse translate the scripts, then USE the language you've learnt. You can screen-share the scripts with a language partner. Or if you're feeling confident use what you've learnt to have a real conversation!
